A brazen attempt at political censorship

A brazen attempt at political censorship
British writer and journalist Auberon Waugh's signal contribution to the English language is the phrase 'chattering classes'. Waugh used the term to disparage the 'metropolitan middle-class'; these days the description would fit the socially mobile, the educated and the fashionable among the urban middle-classes.

Why were the MPs fretting and fuming? The anti-corruption movement spearheaded by Anna, which was demanding a strong Lokpal bill, threatened to bring within its ambit even parliamentarians. And no MP wants to be under scrutiny. So it was only understandable that the media, which was giving the anti-corruption movement extensive play, would come in for attack from the neta class."

Reforming the Press Council

Reforming the Press Council: "THE appointment of Justice Markandey Katju, a former judge of the Supreme Court, as Chairman of the Press Council of India is about the best thing that has happened to that body in a long while. It is no exaggeration to say that the PCI commands little prestige today and less relevance. It is not representative of the press at all. What Justice Katju has done, in a few days after his appointment, is to infuse life into it and involve the press in its work. This is a good step towards making the media feel that it is their institution."

www.outlookindia.com | ‘The Home Ministry Froze Ads To Papers’

The Union information and broadcasting ministry has been in the news for setting some regulatory norms for TV channels. Union I&B minister Ambika Soni explains some of the decisions taken by her ministry:

You have announced a new set of norms to regulate TV channels. This comes after what the government felt was biased coverage of Anna Hazare’s campaign. What prompted these moves?

Do you think that once the movement was over in August, we decided to come out soon after with the guidelines? Perhaps those who obtained broadcast licences forgot to read the guidelines on the ministry’s website. Licences to TV channels are given for 10 years. What does one do after that? All we did was to lay down the rules for renewal, subject to TV channels observing the programme code passed in Parliament. These guidelines have been on the website since February. Also, there are uplinking and downlinking guidelines spelling out the reasons for cancellation of licences. We have said that any decision (on cancellation) will be taken only after consultation with self-regulatory bodies and organisations. What’s wrong with that? The reason behind raising the investment level is to keep non-serious players out.

Muzzling The Media - Times Of India

Muzzling The Media - Times Of India: "What better way to control the Press than to decide the salary of newspaper employees? How can a journalist write fearlessly against a government when he knows that it is this same government that decides his salary? Successive governments in India have found a simple way to try to control the Press: set up a statutory wage board for newspapers, fix unrealistically high wages enforceable under law.

The Indian newspaper industry is the only industry in the country to have a statutory wage board at all! Even other media sectors like TV, radio, internet, etc, do not have this retrograde practice. Why, in this era of liberalisation where licences, quotas, permits etc are being dismantled in all spheres of economic activity, would it be that only the newspaper industry has wages fixed by the government; particularly when they are not based on market demand and supply, and are without consideration for skills and professional qualifications?"

Bollywood boys on Twitter - General news

Bollywood boys on Twitter - General news: "Its high time you let go off the gossip papers and tune to Twitter to hear it personally from the stars. The Bollywood stars sprinkled a little magic on twitter in India, lighted its torch and handed it over to their fans who were more than happy to take it forward. The potential growth predicted for the micro-blogging site among the Bollywood fan base is exceptionally huge as the film industry caters to an audience close to 2 billion people and the percentage of people connecting with the starts is very small today. As the celebrities know it very well that twitter works in their favor to effectively advertise themselves and their films, tweeting become a daily routine for the stars."

Fairness demands that you publish my account of the issue of the coverage of A. Raja relating to the Telecom licences and 2G spectrum allocation that is given below:
At the meeting of the Board of directors of Kasturi and Sons in January, I had specifically raised the issue of the biased coverage of the 2G spectrum scandal. While Raja was in office, even as evidence was mounting and there were widespread calls for his resignation, The Hindu did not demand his resignation. On the other hand, it functioned as an apologist for Raja and even on the day of his resignation carried an interview with him on the front page, with the transcript published inside. In this interview as well as the one on May 22, 2010, there were no hard questions but only the obvious ones designed to elicit ready, scripted answers. The entire coverage up to the point of his resignation was tailored to make him look good."

The Alexa Blog: A new way to find websites

The Alexa Blog: A new way to find websites: "Hello, I'm Wayne, and I'm an engineer here at Alexa. I know I’m biased, but I’m having a lot of fun with Alexa’s new site finder and I thought I would share. The site finder is different type of search engine, one that is designed to find websites about things instead of web pages that contain things. Here, let me explain. When I am looking for something online, I usually go to my favorite search engine, type in a few words, and hit search. What I get is a list of pages that contain those words ranked by some sort of measure of relevance and importance, which often is exactly what I want. Examples of this include searching for help with a coding problem, looking for song lyrics, and finding documentation. Sometimes, however, I’m more interested in finding an entire website devoted to a topic. There is a big difference between sites that have pages that contain the word “woodworking” and sites about woodworking, and with the standard keyword searches we’re used to it can be difficult to find the latter (a website about a topic) in the sea of the former (pages that mention the topic)."

Five myths about the future of journalism - The Washington Post

Five myths about the future of journalism - The Washington Post: "There are few things journalists like to discuss more than, well, themselves and the long-term prospects for their industry. How long will print newspapers survive? Are news aggregation sites the future? Or are online paywalls — such as the one the New York Times just launched — the way to go? As media organizations plot their future, it’s worth discarding some misconceptions about what it will take to keep the press from becoming yesterday’s news."

Media Watch: How Editors are managed

Media Watch: How Editors are managed: "Editors can be broadly divided into two categories: those with substantial circulations spread over large areas of the country; and those with regional circulations. The latter, naturally, have smaller circulations, though there are exceptions (the best example being the Ananda Bazar Patrika). However, both kinds of editors have trouble with two sets of people: the Government and the managements. The views of Government and owners are not necessarily the same, but on one point most owners of publications seem to agree: that their editors should not take criticism of Government too far. And they agree on this because most owners are vulnerable: having business interests apart from news papers, they are aware that if Government wants to, it can create significant barriers between them and their profits from other factories."

The Hindu : Andhra Pradesh / Hyderabad News : Two-year MCJ in OU: "From the ensuing academic year, the Master of Communication and Journalism (MCJ) course offered by the Osmania University will be a two-year course.

The University has decided to club the one-year courses -- Bachelor of Communication and Journalism (BCJ) and MCJ -- to offer the two-year course in tune with the UGC guidelines that Masters courses have to be of two-year duration. The notification of the Osmania University for its PG entrance issued recently reflected this change.

However, this academic year will also have a separate entrance test for the one-year MCJ course for candidates who have already done their BCJ. So, the two-year MCJ and one-year MCJ will run simultaneously in the 2011-12 academic year. From the 2012-13 academic year, it will be a purely two-year course. But candidates who have finished their BCJ long back and want to join MCJ in 2012-13 will be accommodated through late entry. It means they can directly join MCJ second year after clearing the entrance test."

Most of what they hear revolves around Blogs, Digg and Facebook and immediately they think “I have to be there!” Whether its because its the newest fad, their competition is doing it or that they’ve been shown that it can get the SERPs or better yet links, a lot of times companies never stop to look beyond the shiny pretty wrapper of social media to look at what’s really involved when heading down the social media path. At the end of their path, generally it ends in thinking social media has failed them. Why? The major reason is entering into the space for the wrong reason, like acquiring links or getting more footholds in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs)."

OK, so it was invented by the department of defence for the sake of communications, but if there's one industry that can commodify a resource faster than the oil industry can waste it, it's porn. It makes sense, too, since sex is both a basic animal (and human) instinct and also something we frown on and obsess over to the extent that it's frightening. The New York Times subscription plan doesn’t protect print, it promotes the mobile Web | Poynter.: "The New York Times’ new digital subscription pricing has been characterized by some as a backward-looking effort to protect print revenue. [Editorial] Investigative journalism and the people’s right to know : Editorial : Home: "A few days ago, the Supreme Court confirmed a guilty ruling against former and current journalists prosecuted for reporting on the “Agency for National Security Planning X-file.” This file contained transcripts of a conversation that took place before the 1997 presidential election between then-Samsung Group secretarial office head Lee Hak-soo and JoongAng Ilbo Chairman Hong Seok-hyun discussing the delivery of money to a particular candidate and around ten prosecution offices. A major controversy erupted in 2005 when it was reported in the press that the ANSP (current National Intelligence Service) recorded this content illegally, but the people who actually plotting government-business collusion and the buying off of prosecutors, as well as the prosecutors who received the “gifts,” had no charges pressed against them. It is the height of absurdity that it was the journalists who divulged this information who were found guilty of violating the Telecommunications Security Protection Act."

Since then, Twitter has been embraced as a forum for sharing anything from a favorite lunch spot to violations of civil rights and calls for revolution.
"As much fun as we were having, there was always, I think, in the back of our heads the idea of the potential of something important coming from it," Stone said of the startup's formative days.

Four Women Shaking Up the Media Landscape - The Daily Beast

Women have made all sorts of leaps and bounds over the last half a century, but a panel on media Saturday offered a frank level of discussion about where things have fallen short.

Arianna Huffington noted that when her website, the Huffington Post, started up five years ago, she found that her male friends were far more likely to embrace blogging than women. “Every man I invited said, ‘yes, of course’ and my women friends were really nervous about blogging unless they were journalists,” she said.

She came to conclude that the reason for this is that “women still have a problem with being judged. Much more than men. And anything we write anything we do is going to be judged.”
