Twitter, a less 'social' platform than Facebook: Research: "Twitter may have over 200 million registered users, but half of the tweets shared on the popular microblogging site are actually generated by a small group of 'elite' members, a new study has found.
Researchers at Internet search engine Yahoo! who looked at about 260 million tweets posted on Twitter between July 28, 2009 and March 8, 2010 found that 50 per cent of the tweets - or 140-character messages - are shared by only a group of 20,000 users of the networking site, the Telegraph reported."

Mary Richert: Facebook and MySpace are now more popular than porn sites | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk: "It's an old joke among web geeks that 'the internet is for porn'. OK, so it was invented by the department of defence for the sake of communications, but if there's one industry that can commodify a resource faster than the oil industry can waste it, it's porn. It makes sense, too, since sex is both a basic animal (and human) instinct and also something we frown on and obsess over to the extent that it's frightening. When the internet was young and users were still basically anonymous, there was no better way to indulge in a guilty pleasure than from behind the veil of your monitor."

[Editorial] Investigative journalism and the people’s right to know : Editorial : Home: "A few days ago, the Supreme Court confirmed a guilty ruling against former and current journalists prosecuted for reporting on the “Agency for National Security Planning X-file.” This file contained transcripts of a conversation that took place before the 1997 presidential election between then-Samsung Group secretarial office head Lee Hak-soo and JoongAng Ilbo Chairman Hong Seok-hyun discussing the delivery of money to a particular candidate and around ten prosecution offices. A major controversy erupted in 2005 when it was reported in the press that the ANSP (current National Intelligence Service) recorded this content illegally, but the people who actually plotting government-business collusion and the buying off of prosecutors, as well as the prosecutors who received the “gifts,” had no charges pressed against them. It is the height of absurdity that it was the journalists who divulged this information who were found guilty of violating the Telecommunications Security Protection Act."

Twitter, a five-year-old changing the world - Yahoo! News
At five years old, Twitter is just starting to change the world.
Co-founder Jack Dorsey fired off the first tweet on March 21, 2006. It read "just setting up my twttr." It was Dorsey who proposed the idea for Twitter while working with Biz Stone and Evan Williams at podcasting company Odeo.
Since then, Twitter has been embraced as a forum for sharing anything from a favorite lunch spot to violations of civil rights and calls for revolution.
"As much fun as we were having, there was always, I think, in the back of our heads the idea of the potential of something important coming from it," Stone said of the startup's formative days.

Four Women Shaking Up the Media Landscape - The Daily Beast
Women have made all sorts of leaps and bounds over the last half a century, but a panel on media Saturday offered a frank level of discussion about where things have fallen short.
Arianna Huffington noted that when her website, the Huffington Post, started up five years ago, she found that her male friends were far more likely to embrace blogging than women. “Every man I invited said, ‘yes, of course’ and my women friends were really nervous about blogging unless they were journalists,” she said.
She came to conclude that the reason for this is that “women still have a problem with being judged. Much more than men. And anything we write anything we do is going to be judged.”
